Business Aajkal, New Delhi, 07 May 2025: Wing Commander Vyomika Singh is a distinguished helicopter pilot in the Indian Air Force (IAF), renowned for her exemplary service and leadership. On May 7, 2025, she co-led a high-profile media briefing on 'Operation Sindoor,' India's retaliatory strike on terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, following the tragic Pahalgam attack that claimed 26 lives. 
Early Life and Inspiration
Vyomika's aspiration to fly was ignited during her school days. In Class 6, during a discussion about the meaning of names, a classmate remarked that "Vyomika" meant "you own the sky," which deeply resonated with her. This moment solidified her dream of becoming a pilot. 
Military Career
Commissioned into the IAF on December 18, 2004, through the 21st Short Service Commission (Women) Flying Pilot Course, Vyomika became the first in her family to join the armed forces. She was promoted to Wing Commander in 2017 and received a permanent commission in the flying branch on December 18, 2019. 
With over 2,500 flying hours, she has operated helicopters like the Chetak and Cheetah across challenging terrains, including high-altitude sectors in Jammu and Kashmir and remote areas in the Northeast. In 2020, she led a rescue operation in Arunachal Pradesh, evacuating civilians under extreme conditions. 
Personal Life
Vyomika is married to Major Tajuddin Qureshi of the Mechanised Infantry, and they have a son named Sameer. 
Role in Operation Sindoor
During the Operation Sindoor briefing, Vyomika emphasized that the operation aimed to dismantle terrorist infrastructure to "break the backbone of terrorism." Her participation highlighted the increasing leadership roles of women in India's military.
