'Fake signature' row: CID serves second summons to Abhishek Banerjee for appearance on June 8

Business To Business, Kolkata, 1st June, 2026:   The investigation involving senior Trinamool Congress leader Abhishek Banerjee took a fresh turn on Monday when officers of the Criminal Investigation Department reportedly visited his residence for the second time in a little over 48 hours and served him with a new notice to appear for questioning on June 8.
Background of the case
The probe relates to allegations that forged signatures of several TMC MLAs were used in a communication sent to the Speaker of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly. The communication reportedly concerned the endorsement of Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay as the Leader of the Opposition.
Investigators are examining how the alleged forged signatures came to be included in the document and whether any criminal offences were committed.
Latest developments

  • Banerjee had been summoned by the CID to appear on Monday.
  • He did not attend the scheduled questioning.
  • According to sources, he sought an additional two weeks' time, citing health-related reasons.
  • The CID subsequently issued a fresh notice directing him to appear at Bhabani Bhavan, the agency's headquarters in Kolkata, on June 8.
Political significance
The case has drawn considerable attention because of Banerjee's prominent position within the ruling All India Trinamool Congress and West Bengal politics. Any investigation involving a senior party leader is likely to generate political debate between the ruling party and the opposition.
Current status
At present, the matter remains under investigation. The CID is expected to question Banerjee regarding the circumstances surrounding the disputed document and the alleged use of forged signatures. No conclusions have been reached, and the allegations remain subject to investigation and any subsequent judicial proceedings.
