'Pathetic, unacceptable': Cong slams PM for not raising with Trump killing of 3 Indian seafarers

Business To Business, New Delhi, 17th June, 2026:  The Indian National Congress on Wednesday criticized Narendra Modi for not publicly mentioning the deaths of three Indian seafarers during his remarks alongside Donald Trump at the G7 Summit in France.
The opposition party described the omission as "pathetic and totally unacceptable," arguing that the Prime Minister should have specifically raised the issue of the three Indian crew members who were killed in an American military strike on a merchant vessel.
According to the Congress, a public acknowledgment of the incident was necessary given the loss of Indian lives and the public concern surrounding the episode.
During their bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the summit, Modi reportedly:

  • Raised concerns about the safety and security of seafarers.
  • Emphasized the importance of protecting maritime workers operating in conflict zones.
  • Called for provisions safeguarding seafarers in any proposed peace arrangement involving the United States and Iran.
  • Highlighted the risks faced by large numbers of Indian sailors working on international shipping routes.
However, the Congress argued that while the broader issue of seafarer safety was discussed, the deaths of the three Indian mariners were not explicitly mentioned during the leaders' public statements.
The controversy stems from the deaths of three Indian crew members aboard a merchant vessel struck during US military operations in the Gulf region. The incident triggered concern in India because of the country's large maritime workforce and the strategic importance of shipping routes in the region.
The exchange has become part of a broader political debate over:
  • The government's handling of the incident.
  • India's response to the deaths of its citizens abroad.
  • Protection of Indian seafarers in conflict-prone waters.
  • The state of India-US relations amid regional tensions.
While the government has emphasized its efforts to raise seafarer safety concerns at the highest diplomatic levels, the Congress maintains that the specific issue of the three deaths deserved a more direct and public response during the Modi-Trump interaction.
