Abhishek Banerjee urges Speaker not to recognise rebel TMC bloc ahead of dissidents' meeting

Business To Business, Kolkata, 14th June, 2026:    Amid an escalating rebellion within the All India Trinamool Congress, the party's leader in the Lok Sabha, Abhishek Banerjee, has written to Om Birla urging him not to recognize any breakaway faction formed by dissident MPs.
In his letter, Abhishek Banerjee argued that the Constitution and the anti-defection law do not permit the creation of a separate group within an existing political party in Parliament. He requested that the All India Trinamool Congress continue to be treated as a single parliamentary party represented only through its officially authorized leader and whip.
The development comes as the All India Trinamool Congress, led by Mamata Banerjee, faces a major internal crisis following its defeat in the West Bengal Assembly Election 2026. A dissident camp within the party has claimed the support of 22 MPs and has indicated that it intends to meet the Speaker to seek recognition as a separate parliamentary bloc.
Abhishek Banerjee also requested that the party be given an opportunity to present its case before any decision is taken on communications submitted by the rebel MPs.
The dispute now places the focus on the Speaker's office, which may have to examine the legal and procedural implications of the dissidents' claim. The outcome could significantly influence the balance of power within the Trinamool Congress and its parliamentary representation in the Lok Sabha.
