Abhishek reaches CID HQ to appear for questioning in signature forgery case linked to LoP selection

Business To Business, Kolkata, 11th June, 2026:   Abhishek Banerjee on Thursday appeared before the Criminal Investigation Department in connection with an investigation into an alleged signature forgery case related to the selection of the Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly.
Appearance After Earlier Absences
Banerjee had previously skipped three summonses issued by the CID, citing:

  • Illness.
  • A legal challenge filed before the Calcutta High Court.
On Thursday, he reached the CID headquarters, Bhabani Bhavan, at around 5:50 pm.
High Court Relief
Earlier in the day, the Calcutta High Court granted Banerjee interim protection from any coercive action by the investigating agency.
The court also directed the All India Trinamool Congress MP to appear before the CID headquarters by 6 pm, a direction with which he complied.
The investigation relates to allegations of signature forgery concerning documents connected to the opposition's choice of Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly.
The CID is examining the circumstances surrounding the alleged irregularities and has been questioning individuals linked to the matter.
The case has attracted significant political attention in West Bengal because it involves one of the most prominent leaders of the ruling Trinamool Congress and concerns proceedings connected to the state legislature.
Banerjee's appearance before investigators follows judicial intervention balancing the ongoing investigation with protection from immediate coercive measures. The matter is expected to remain under legal and political scrutiny as the CID continues its probe.
