After defection blow, Uddhav strategises with MLAs to corner Mahayuti govt in monsoon session
Business To Business, Mumbai, 22nd June, 2026: Amid a deepening political crisis in Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) following the defection of six MPs to the rival faction led by Eknath Shinde, party chief Uddhav Thackeray on Monday convened a meeting of party MLAs to formulate a strategy for the ongoing monsoon session of the Maharashtra legislature.
The meeting was held at the party's Shivalay office on the opening day of the session and came at a politically sensitive moment, with the six rebel MPs formally aligning themselves with the Shinde-led Shiv Sena faction.
Focus on Legislative Strategy
According to a legislator who attended the meeting, Thackeray directed party MLAs to aggressively challenge the ruling Mahayuti government on a range of public issues.
Among the key issues highlighted were:
- Farm loan waiver measures
- Demand for complete rather than partial debt relief for farmers
- Agrarian distress
- Governance and public welfare concerns
- Other issues expected to be raised during the monsoon session
Political Significance
The meeting underscored the party leadership's effort to maintain unity within its legislative wing despite the setback caused by the parliamentary defections.
The timing was particularly noteworthy, as the meeting took place while the six rebel MPs were holding activities related to their move to the rival Shiv Sena faction nearby.
Opposition Role
With the monsoon session underway, Shiv Sena (UBT) appears to be focusing on strengthening its role as an opposition force in the Assembly and using legislative debates to put pressure on the government.
The developments mark another chapter in the continuing struggle for political space and organizational strength between the Uddhav Thackeray-led camp and the faction led by Eknath Shinde, a rivalry that has reshaped Maharashtra politics over the past several years.
