AIADMK chief lashes out at TN govt over power crisis, claims outages ‘severe economic disruption’
Business To Business, Chennai, 11th June, 2026: Edappadi K. Palaniswami on Thursday accused the Tamil Nadu government of failing to adequately prepare for rising electricity demand, claiming that unannounced power outages and extreme summer temperatures are causing hardship for residents across the state.
Allegations Against the State Government
Palaniswami said that:
- Frequent and unscheduled power cuts are affecting households and businesses.
- Temperatures touching around 40°C have worsened the situation.
- The government failed to properly plan for:
- Power generation.
- Electricity procurement.
- Expansion of transmission infrastructure.
- Establishment of new substations.
The AIADMK leader argued that peak power demand during summer is a predictable annual phenomenon and should have been anticipated through better planning.
Rising Electricity Demand
Palaniswami referred to projections by the
Central Electricity Authority (CEA), which estimate that Tamil Nadu's electricity demand could reach
23,013 megawatts (MW) in 2026-27.
According to the opposition leader, such projections underscore the need for:
- Additional generation capacity.
- Stronger transmission networks.
- Timely infrastructure upgrades.
- Adequate power procurement arrangements.
Political Context
The criticism comes amid ongoing political competition between the opposition
All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and the ruling state government.
Power supply and infrastructure management have often been major political issues in Tamil Nadu, particularly during periods of high summer demand when electricity consumption rises sharply due to increased use of cooling appliances.
Importance of Reliable Power Supply
Reliable electricity supply is crucial for:
- Residential consumers.
- Industrial production.
- Commercial establishments.
- Agriculture.
- Essential public services.
As demand continues to grow, states across India face the challenge of balancing generation capacity, transmission infrastructure, and fuel availability while ensuring uninterrupted power supply.
Government Response Awaited
The state government had not immediately responded to Palaniswami's latest allegations. The issue is likely to remain a point of political debate as Tamil Nadu seeks to meet rising electricity demand amid economic growth, urbanization, and seasonal temperature extremes.
