Assam Assembly passes Uniform Civil Code Bill
Business To Business, Guwahati, 27th May, 2026: The Assam Legislative Assembly on Wednesday passed the proposed Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill, marking a significant legislative step toward creating a common legal framework governing personal laws across communities.
The Bill seeks to introduce a uniform set of rules for:
- Marriage
- Divorce
- Inheritance and succession
- Live-in relationships
The legislation aims to apply these provisions irrespective of religion, effectively replacing multiple personal laws with a single civil code framework.
During the debate, opposition members demanded that the Bill be referred to a select committee for deeper scrutiny, but the proposal was not accepted.
With this development, Assam becomes the third Indian state to pass a Uniform Civil Code-related Bill, after Uttarakhand and Gujarat. Separately, Goa already follows a common civil code system that dates back to its Portuguese-era civil law framework.
The passage of the Bill adds Assam to the growing list of states engaging with the idea of uniform civil legislation, an issue that continues to generate legal, political, and constitutional debate nationwide.
