BCI seeks report from WB Bar Council on practice status of Mamata Banerjee after HC appearance

Business To Business, Kolkata, 14th May 2026:  Hours after former West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee appeared in advocate robes before the Calcutta High Court, the Bar Council of India on Thursday sought a detailed report from the Bar Council of West Bengal within 48 hours regarding her enrolment and professional practice status.
Banerjee, accompanied by senior All India Trinamool Congress leaders Chandrima Bhattacharya and Kalyan Banerjee, appeared before the high court in connection with a case relating to alleged post-poll violence and attacks on party offices.
Under prevailing legal practice norms, individuals holding constitutional offices or engaged in full-time employment are generally required to suspend their bar licence during their tenure. To resume legal practice, the licence must subsequently be revived in accordance with applicable rules and procedures.
