Bengal govt hands over probe into actor Rahul Banerjee's death to CID: CM Suvendu Adhikari
Business To Business, Kolkata, 15th June, 2026: The West Bengal government has decided to transfer the investigation into the death of actor Rahul Banerjee to the Criminal Investigation Department, following demands from his family and members of the film industry for a more detailed probe.
Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari said he had asked the Purba Medinipur Police to begin the formal process for transferring the case.

Speaking to reporters in Digha, Adhikari said:
"Recently, a film star died in Udaipur. The Odisha government constituted an SIT and started an investigation. I have instructed Purba Medinipur SP to immediately send the proposal through the DGP to the home secretary so that the CID can take over this case."
The decision comes amid:
- Continued demands from the actor's family for a comprehensive investigation.
- Calls from members of the film fraternity for greater scrutiny of the circumstances surrounding the death.
- Public interest in ensuring an independent and thorough probe.
Once the administrative formalities are completed:
- The Criminal Investigation Department will assume charge of the investigation.
- Case records and evidence gathered by district police will be transferred to the CID.
- Investigators may re-examine evidence, question witnesses, and review the circumstances leading to the actor's death.
Authorities have not publicly disclosed any conclusions regarding the cause or circumstances of Rahul Banerjee's death. The transfer to the CID is intended to facilitate a more specialized investigation and address concerns raised by the family and the film industry.
The probe remains ongoing, and officials have indicated that further details will emerge as the CID begins its inquiry.
