Bengal public prosecutor in Trinamool leader's case receives threats, lodges complaint

Business To Business, Kolkata, 11 September 2026: Special public prosecutor Bivas Chatterjee, handling the disproportionate assets case against arrested Trinamool Congress leader and former Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation (BMC) councillor Debraj Chakraborty, has alleged that he received threatening phone calls warning him against pursuing the case and has now lodged a police complaint.

Speaking to media persons on Friday, public prosecutor Bivas Chatterjee said a caller claiming to be a close associate of arrested former BMC councillor Debraj Chakraborty contacted him and sought to discuss the case. The caller allegedly claimed he was speaking on Chakraborty's instructions and warned the prosecutor not to "go too far" with the proceedings.

"The person was speaking in a threatening tone. The man told me not to go too far with Chakraborty’s case. After receiving the call, I approached the police and lodged a complaint at Baguiati Police Station," Chatterjee said.

According to him, the call was received while he was in his chamber. Chatterjee said the number appeared on the Truecaller application under the name "Raju Hasan, General Secretary, AB Supporter State Committee". He added that he was unaware of any such organisation but had furnished the number to police as part of his complaint.

The development comes amid ongoing legal proceedings against Debraj Chakraborty. Of the two FIRs registered against him at Baguiati Police Station, a charge sheet has already been filed in one case and charges are expected to be framed shortly, while investigation in the second case is continuing.

Chatterjee is currently appearing as the special public prosecutor in the matter and is also associated with several other high-profile cases in West Bengal, including proceedings against absconding Birbhum-based stone quarry businessman Tulu Mandal, alias Md Naxzibuddin.

Debraj Chakraborty, husband of former Trinamool Congress MLA and devotional singer Aditi Munsi, was arrested in July this year on multiple charges, including extortion and possession of disproportionate assets.

He also faces allegations related to an extortion racket, land grabbing, syndicate operations in the Bidhannagar area, and a case linked to post-poll violence in 2021. He is currently in judicial custody.
