Kolkata, New Delhi, INDIA. New York, USA.
Business To Business, Kolkata, 29th June, 2026: Suvendu Adhikari on Monday formally initiated the process of introducing a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in West Bengal by announcing the constitution of a high-level committee to prepare the framework for the proposed legislation.
The committee will be headed by former Supreme Court of India judge Ranjana Prakash Desai.
According to the chief minister, the panel has been asked to submit its recommendations within four weeks, enabling the state government to introduce the proposed UCC Bill during the extended Budget Session of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly in August.
Making the announcement on the concluding day of the current Assembly session, Adhikari said the state Cabinet would examine the draft Bill at its scheduled meeting on July 2 before finalising it for introduction in the legislature.
The proposed Uniform Civil Code seeks to establish a common set of civil laws governing matters such as marriage, divorce, inheritance and adoption, replacing religion-specific personal laws. The move is expected to be debated extensively in the Assembly after the committee submits its recommendations.
