Business To Business, New Deli, 30th May, 2026: Kapil Sibal on Saturday condemned the attack on Abhishek Banerjee in Sonarpur and alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party “epitomises” violence in both words and actions.
According to reports, Banerjee came under attack when he visited Sonarpur to meet families affected by post-poll violence. A crowd allegedly hurled stones, eggs and verbal abuse at him.
The All India Trinamool Congress leader was escorted away from the scene by his aides and was seen wearing a cricket helmet for protection amid the disturbance.
Following the incident, Banerjee claimed that BJP activists were attempting to kill him. The BJP has been accused by TMC leaders and several opposition figures of being behind the attack, while the incident has intensified the political confrontation in West Bengal after the recent assembly elections.
Sibal's remarks add to a growing list of opposition leaders who have condemned the attack and raised concerns about the security provided to opposition politicians in the state.
