Business To Business, Kolkata, 07th July, 2026: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday said the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in West Bengal was implementing its key electoral commitments, including steps towards introducing a Uniform Civil Code (UCC), curbing illegal infiltration and strengthening measures against crime, while asserting that the vision of a "Sonar Bangla" was taking shape under the leadership of Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari.
Addressing a programme organised to commemorate the 125th birth anniversary of Bharatiya Jana Sangh founder Syama Prasad Mookerjee, Shah said the state government's policy initiatives reflected the ideological vision of the late leader.
The Home Minister linked issues such as citizenship, national integration, law and order and cultural nationalism to Mookerjee's legacy, describing the BJP government's agenda as an extension of the principles he championed.
During the event, Shah laid the foundation stone for a 125-foot-tall statue of Syama Prasad Mookerjee, which is intended to commemorate the Jana Sangh founder's contribution to India's political and intellectual history.
He also announced that a committee had been constituted to work towards the implementation of a Uniform Civil Code in West Bengal, describing it as part of the government's broader reform agenda.
Shah said the state government was focused on fulfilling its election promises by improving governance, strengthening internal security, tackling illegal infiltration and ensuring effective law enforcement, while working towards the broader objective of transforming West Bengal into a prosperous and developed state under the vision of "Sonar Bangla."
