BJP govt makes Bengali mandatory in official work, seeks to blunt TMC's long-held 'outsider' plank

Business To Business, Kolkata, 21st July, 2026:   The BJP government in West Bengal on Monday announced that Bengali will become mandatory for all official communications from September 1, a move that marks a significant shift in the state's administrative language policy.
Making the announcement in the Assembly, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari read out a letter written in Bengali by Union Home Minister Amit Shah during his recent visit to Kolkata, in which he urged the state government to promote the extensive use of Bengali across all levels of administration.
Adhikari said Bengali will become the primary language for file notings, departmental correspondence, government notifications, citizen services and official communication with the Centre from September 1.
