BJP's UCC bill set for twin TMC challenge in Bengal Assembly

Business To Business, Kolkata, 28th June, 2026:     The BJP government's proposed Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill is expected to trigger an intense political contest in the West Bengal Assembly on Monday, with the debate extending beyond the traditional confrontation between the treasury benches and the opposition to include a rivalry between the two competing factions of the All India Trinamool Congress.
The legislation, one of the BJP government's key electoral promises, is set to be introduced less than two months after the party ended the TMC's 15-year rule in the state. Its introduction is expected to mark the first major ideological confrontation of the new Assembly.
The debate is also likely to become the first significant parliamentary test for the rival TMC camps led by former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Leader of Opposition Ritabrata Banerjee.
Both factions are expected to seek to establish themselves as the principal opposition voice against the proposed legislation, reflecting the month-long struggle within the party over its leadership, organisational control and political legacy following the Assembly election defeat.
The discussion on the UCC Bill is expected to dominate proceedings in the Assembly, with the ruling BJP defending the measure as part of its governance agenda, while the opposition is likely to raise constitutional, social and political concerns during the debate.
