BJP threat to democracy, 2027 UP polls crucial for saving democratic system: Akhilesh

Business To Business, Lucknow, 15th June, 2026:   Akhilesh Yadav on Monday alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party poses a threat to democracy and said that the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections would be crucial for safeguarding the democratic system.
Addressing party leaders and workers at the Samajwadi Party headquarters in Lucknow, Yadav urged party members to prepare for the upcoming electoral battle, describing it as a significant contest for the future of democratic institutions.
According to Yadav:
"The BJP poses a threat to democracy. The 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls will be crucial for protecting the democratic system. If democracy is not protected, the Uttar Pradesh election could be the last election."
He further asserted that it was the responsibility of the Samajwadi Party and its workers to protect democratic values and ensure public participation in the electoral process.
The remarks come as political parties in Uttar Pradesh begin positioning themselves for the 2027 Assembly elections, which are expected to be one of the most closely watched state contests in the country.
The Samajwadi Party, the principal opposition party in Uttar Pradesh, has been seeking to consolidate support against the BJP, which has governed the state since 2017.
The Uttar Pradesh Assembly election is considered politically important because:

  • Uttar Pradesh is India's most populous state.
  • It sends the largest number of representatives to Parliament.
  • Electoral outcomes in the state often influence national political trends.
  • The contest is expected to shape the balance of power among major political parties ahead of future national elections.
The BJP has repeatedly rejected opposition allegations that it undermines democratic institutions, while opposition parties, including the SP, continue to raise concerns about governance and the functioning of democratic processes.
