BJP’s Tai Tagak elected unopposed to Rajya Sabha from Arunachal

Business To Business, New Delhi, 11th June, 2026:   Senior BJP leader Tai Tagak was on Thursday declared elected unopposed to the lone Rajya Sabha seat from Arunachal Pradesh after the deadline for withdrawal of nominations ended with no other candidate remaining in the contest.
The declaration was made by Tadar Meena, who serves as the returning officer for the election.
According to a communiqué issued by the Assembly Secretariat:

  • Only one valid nomination was filed.
  • No candidate withdrew before the stipulated deadline of 3 pm.
  • Consequently, Tagak was declared elected under the provisions of the Representation of the People Act, 1951 and the Conduct of Elections Rules, 1961.
The election ensures that the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party retains representation from Arunachal Pradesh in the Upper House of Parliament.
Rajya Sabha members from Arunachal Pradesh are elected by the state's Legislative Assembly. Since the BJP and its allies enjoy a dominant position in the Assembly, Tagak's unopposed election was widely anticipated.
Arunachal Pradesh, one of India's smaller states by population, sends one member to the Rajya Sabha.
The declaration comes amid Rajya Sabha elections being held across several states for seats falling vacant due to the retirement of sitting members. While contests have emerged in some states, Arunachal Pradesh witnessed no opposition candidate, resulting in Tai Tagak's election without a vote being conducted.
His entry into the Rajya Sabha further strengthens the BJP-led NDA's numbers in the Upper House, where the alliance has been steadily improving its position through recent elections.
