BRICS has vital role in deepening security cooperation, addressing shared challenges: PM
Business To Business, New Delhi, 23rd June, 2026: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said that the BRICS has an important role to play in strengthening security cooperation and addressing common challenges in an increasingly complex global environment.
Speaking after meeting National Security Advisors and senior security officials from BRICS member countries, Modi emphasized the need for greater collaboration on a range of security issues.
Focus on Emerging Security Challenges
The Prime Minister highlighted several areas where BRICS countries can work together, including:
- Counter-terrorism
- Cybersecurity
- Emerging technologies
- Strategic and regional security issues
- Other transnational challenges affecting member nations
He noted that the evolving global landscape requires closer coordination among countries to address risks that increasingly transcend national borders.
India's BRICS Chairmanship
Modi also outlined India's priorities as chair of BRICS, stating that New Delhi would seek to:
- Advance practical and result-oriented cooperation among member countries
- Promote the interests and priorities of the Global South
- Strengthen collaboration in security and development
- Contribute to a safer, more secure, and inclusive world order
Significance of BRICS
BRICS brings together major emerging economies, including Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, along with newer member states admitted in recent years.
The grouping has increasingly expanded its agenda beyond economic cooperation to include discussions on security, technology, global governance, and development issues.
