Business To Business, Kolkata, 07th July, 2026: The Calcutta High Court on Tuesday set aside a Kolkata Police communication denying permission to the Mamata Banerjee-aligned Trinamool Youth Congress (TMYC) to hold a protest rally in south Kolkata and allowed the organisation to conduct the event on July 8, subject to a series of stringent conditions.
Hearing the matter, Justice Saugata Bhattacharya modified the proposed route of the rally in an effort to minimise public inconvenience. While the procession will commence from Ballygunge Phari crossing and proceed along Hazra Road, the court directed that it conclude at Hazra crossing instead of the originally proposed destination near Lansdowne Market on Sarat Bose Road.
The court also revised the timing of the rally, permitting it to be held from 2.30 pm to 4.30 pm instead of the originally proposed schedule of 3 pm to 6 pm.
To ensure minimal disruption to public life and traffic, the High Court imposed several conditions. It prohibited the use of loudspeakers during the procession, allowing only handheld microphones. The organisers were also directed to keep one side of the rally route open to facilitate the movement of vehicles throughout the event.
Further, the court capped participation at 1,000 people and instructed the organisers to ensure that the gathering disperses immediately after reaching the designated endpoint at Hazra crossing.
The order came after the Trinamool Youth Congress challenged the Kolkata Police's refusal to grant permission for the protest. By modifying the route and imposing operational safeguards, the High Court sought to balance the organisers' right to hold a peaceful demonstration with the need to maintain public order and minimise inconvenience to commuters and residents.
