Business To Business, Kolkata, 30th June, 2026: The Calcutta High Court on Tuesday directed the West Bengal government to ensure that police register First Information Reports (FIRs) in all cases involving egg pelting at accused persons or political opponents.
The direction came while hearing a public interest litigation (PIL) seeking measures to curb incidents of egg pelting at individuals accused in various cases due to political rivalry in different parts of the state.
A division bench comprising Acting Chief Justice Tapabrata Chakraborty and Justice Partha Sarathi Chatterjee orally observed that the fundamental rights of an accused person cannot be taken away merely because allegations have been made against them.
The bench also remarked that making a few arrests alone would not resolve the issue, stressing that the problem requires greater social awareness alongside legal action. The court directed the state to ensure appropriate police action by registering FIRs in every such incident.
