Business To Business, Chennai, 7th June, 2026: Senior Congress leader P. Chidambaram said that the Congress informed the leadership of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam before extending support to the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam.
Congress, which had contested the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections as part of the DMK-led alliance, offered the support of its five MLAs to help TVK form a government.
Chidambaram justified the move by saying that a failure to form a stable government could have led to fresh elections, which neither alliance partners nor the public wanted.
His remarks appear aimed at dispelling any perception that Congress acted independently or against the interests of its ally DMK.
The statement also highlights a broader political calculation: supporting government formation to ensure stability rather than risking another costly and uncertain election.
Political significance: By emphasizing that the DMK leadership was informed in advance, Chidambaram seeks to show that Congress's support for TVK was coordinated within the alliance framework and was motivated by the goal of maintaining political stability in the state.
