CM Sawant backs police action over ‘Umar Khalid’ placards at Goa protests

Business To Business, Panaji, 27th July, 2026:    Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Sunday said the state would not tolerate anyone involved in "anti-national" activities, as police questioned organisers of two protests where placards allegedly demanding the release of jailed student activist Umar Khalid were displayed.
The protests, organised in Mapusa and Panaji on Friday and Saturday, were called by Uzvad NGO to demand the resignation of former Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over alleged irregularities in the examination system and the NEET paper leak.
Police summoned Amreen Shaikh, head of the NGO, to the Mapusa police station for questioning in connection with the matter.
The action followed a complaint filed on Saturday by a group of citizens alleging that some participants in the protests had displayed placards seeking Khalid's release.
Earlier, Goa Police had detained two youths after one of them allegedly displayed a placard supporting Khalid during a gathering in Panaji.
Commenting on the developments, Sawant said those involved in anti-national movements would not be tolerated in Goa. Police are continuing their inquiry into the incident.
