Business To Business, Kolkata, 30th May, 2026: There was confusion on Saturday evening regarding the medical condition and hospitalisation status of Abhishek Banerjee after he was taken to a private hospital in Kolkata following an attack earlier in the day in Sonarpur.
According to hospital officials, Banerjee complained of pain in his neck, back and waist after the incident and was brought to the medical facility for examination.
A senior hospital official said preliminary test results indicated that the injuries sustained by Banerjee were superficial in nature and did not appear to require hospitalisation. However, doctors decided to conduct a more detailed evaluation and additional tests to assess his condition.
The hospital reportedly allotted him a bed in its Intensive Therapy Unit (ITU), even as officials maintained that the initial medical assessment did not indicate serious injuries warranting admission.
"According to preliminary test reports, the injuries sustained by Banerjee are superficial in nature. He doesn't require hospitalisation. However, our doctors are trying to evaluate the injuries more closely, and necessary tests will be conducted," a hospital official said.
The development followed the attack on Banerjee during his visit to Sonarpur, where he had gone to meet families affected by post-poll violence. The incident has triggered strong political reactions from the All India Trinamool Congress, the Indian National Congress, and other opposition leaders, who have condemned the assault and raised questions about security arrangements.
