Cong, BJP seek Bhagwant Mann's resignation after Akal Takht declares him ‘anti-Guru’

Business To Business, Chandigarh, 15th June, 2026:   The Indian National Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party on Monday demanded the resignation of Bhagwant Mann after the Akal Takht declared him "Guru Dokhi" (anti-Guru) and "Khalsa Panth Virodhi" (against the Khalsa Panth).
The development stems from allegations that Mann made misleading statements regarding a purported objectionable video that allegedly hurt Sikh religious sentiments. Following the controversy, the Akal Takht reportedly directed members of the Sikh community not to associate with the Punjab chief minister.
Opposition demands resignation
Reacting to the Akal Takht's decision, both the Congress and the BJP intensified their criticism of the Aam Aadmi Party government in Punjab.
Kewal Singh Dhillon called for Mann's resignation, stating:
"Akal Takht Sahib is the highest temporal authority of the Sikhs, and every directive issued by it is respected and accepted by the community members."
The BJP leader argued that the Akal Takht's declaration had serious moral and political implications for the chief minister.
The Akal Takht, established by Guru Hargobind, is regarded as the supreme temporal institution in Sikhism and carries considerable religious and moral authority among Sikhs worldwide.
The controversy has added a new dimension to Punjab's political landscape, with opposition parties seeking to leverage the Akal Takht's declaration to increase pressure on the chief minister and the ruling Aam Aadmi Party.
As of now, there has been no indication that Mann intends to step down, and the issue is likely to remain a major subject of political debate in Punjab in the coming days.
