Cong candidate Praveen Chakravarty set to be elected unopposed to RS from TN

Business To Business, New Delhi, 8th June, 2026:   Praveen Chakravarty, the Congress candidate backed by the ruling alliance led by the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), is set to be elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha from Tamil Nadu.
The Rajya Sabha seat became vacant after C. Ve. Shanmugam resigned from the Upper House following his election as an MLA from the Mayilam Assembly constituency in the recently concluded Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.
About Praveen Chakravarty

  • Age: 53
  • Hails from Kesavaperumalpuram, Chennai
  • Serves as Chairperson of the Congress' Data Analytics and Professionals Wing
  • Has been a key strategist and policy voice within the Indian National Congress
Although a few independent candidates filed nominations before the June 8 deadline, Chakravarty is widely expected to be elected unopposed.
The election schedule is:
  • Scrutiny of nominations: June 9
  • Last date for withdrawal: June 11
  • Polling (if required): June 18
If all other valid candidates withdraw or fail to meet eligibility requirements after scrutiny, Chakravarty will be declared elected without a contest.
Political Significance
The expected victory reflects the strength of the ruling alliance in the Tamil Nadu Assembly, where the Congress is an alliance partner of the TVK-led government. It will also add another Congress member to the Rajya Sabha at a time when the party is seeking to strengthen its presence in the Upper House.
The development comes amid a broader round of Rajya Sabha elections across several states, with competitive contests underway in places such as Madhya Pradesh and Jharkhand, while Tamil Nadu appears headed for a straightforward outcome.
