Business To Business, New Deli, 30th May, 2026: The Indian National Congress on Saturday strongly condemned the alleged attack on Abhishek Banerjee in Sonarpur and criticised what it described as inadequate police protection for a prominent opposition leader.
Abhishek Banerjee, a senior leader of the All India Trinamool Congress, was reportedly roughed up while visiting Sonarpur to meet families affected by post-poll violence.
According to police, unidentified individuals hurled stones, shoes and eggs at the MP and allegedly attempted to assault him while shouting slogans of “thief, thief”.
Reacting to the incident, the Congress said the alleged failure to provide adequate security reflected what it termed the Bharatiya Janata Party's politics of “vendetta and persecution”.
The incident has further intensified the political confrontation in West Bengal, with opposition parties and the ruling establishment trading allegations over responsibility for the violence and the broader post-election law-and-order situation.
