Delhi govt to strengthen 270 km of roads across the capital: CM
Business To Business, New Delhi, 24th June, 2026: The Government of Delhi will undertake repairs and strengthening of approximately 270 kilometres of roads across the national capital at an estimated cost of ₹657 crore, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced on Wednesday.
Focus on Road Quality and Transparency
Gupta chaired a meeting of the expenditure and finance committee and directed officials to adopt strict monitoring measures for all road projects.
Key instructions include:
- Uploading geo-tagged photographs before the start of work.
- Regular photo updates during execution.
- Uploading photographs after completion.
- Using the images to track project progress and ensure accountability.
Five-Year Defect Liability Clause
The Chief Minister said all road projects will include a
five-year defect liability period, making contractors responsible for maintaining the roads after construction.
Under the provision:
- Contractors will remain accountable for road quality for five years.
- Any pothole or defect that develops during this period must be repaired within 48 hours.
- Failure to meet maintenance obligations could invite action under contract conditions.
Government's Objective
Gupta said the initiative is aimed at:
- Building stronger and more durable roads.
- Improving commuting conditions for residents.
- Enhancing transparency in public works.
- Ensuring better use of public funds through accountability mechanisms.
Expected Impact
The large-scale road repair programme is expected to improve connectivity and road safety across various parts of Delhi. The emphasis on geo-tagged monitoring and long-term maintenance obligations reflects the government's effort to ensure higher construction standards and reduce recurring road damage.
Officials are expected to begin implementation of the approved projects in phases, with progress being monitored through the digital documentation system mandated by the Chief Minister.
