Deteriorating law and order in West Bengal 'appalling', says PDP chief Mufti
Business To Business, Srinagar, 31st May, 2026: Mehbooba Mufti on Sunday criticised the situation in West Bengal following the recent Assembly elections, describing the alleged deterioration in law and order as "appalling".
In a post on X, Mufti referred to the attack on Abhishek Banerjee and alleged that institutions such as the police were failing to act impartially.
She wrote that the "deteriorating law & order" situation since the Bharatiya Janata Party won the state elections was deeply concerning and alleged that assaults were being carried out against political opponents.
Background
The remarks came after Abhishek Banerjee was attacked by a crowd during a visit to Sonarpur in South 24 Parganas district. According to reports:
- Stones, eggs and shoes were allegedly hurled at him.
- He later claimed that BJP supporters were behind the attack.
- The BJP has rejected such allegations.
- The incident triggered sharp political reactions from several opposition leaders and parties.
Political reactions
Leaders from various opposition parties, including the Indian National Congress and independent Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal, have also condemned the attack and called for accountability.
The BJP, meanwhile, has accused the opposition of politicising the incident and has disputed claims regarding its role.
The episode has intensified the political confrontation in West Bengal, where tensions have remained high following the Assembly election results and subsequent incidents of alleged political violence.
