Dissident TMC faction to approach LS Speaker, seek recognition as 'real TMC'
Business To Business, New Delhi, 12th June, 2026: A group of dissident MPs from the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) plans to meet Om Birla on Monday to seek recognition as the "real TMC" in Parliament.
The announcement was made by Jagadish Chandra Barma Basunia, one of the leaders of the rebel faction and among the MPs who have expressed support for the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in the Lok Sabha.
Basunia claimed that the dissident camp currently has the backing of 19 Lok Sabha MPs.
According to him, the group has already prepared its claim and will formally present it to the Speaker.
"On Monday, we will go to the Speaker, and we have made a claim regarding forming the real TMC vote group. We will ask the Speaker to give recognition to our claim," Basunia said.
The move comes amid a deepening crisis within the TMC, which has recently witnessed:
- Resignations of several MPs from the party.
- Public disagreements among senior leaders.
- Growing factional tensions.
- Challenges to the leadership structure of the party.
The developments have intensified speculation about a possible split in the party led by
Mamata Banerjee.
Recognition of a separate parliamentary group is governed by parliamentary rules and anti-defection provisions. The Speaker may need to examine:
- The numerical strength of the dissident faction.
- Whether the group qualifies under applicable parliamentary procedures.
- Any implications under the Tenth Schedule (anti-defection law).
A decision could affect the allocation of speaking time, seating arrangements, committee representation, and the official status of the rival factions within Parliament.
The planned meeting with the Speaker on Monday is expected to be a crucial test of the dissidents' claim. If the faction can demonstrate substantial support, it could trigger a major political and legal battle over the identity and parliamentary representation of the TMC.
The response of the Speaker and the counter-strategy adopted by the party leadership are likely to shape the next phase of the ongoing turmoil within West Bengal's ruling party.
