Elgar case: NIA seeks cancellation of activists Sudha Bharadwaj and Varavara Rao's bail

Business To Business, New Delhi, 15th May 2026: The National Investigation Agency on Friday sought cancellation of the bail granted to Sudha Bharadwaj and Varavara Rao in the Elgar Parishad case, alleging that the two attended a gathering convened to propagate Maoist ideology in violation of court-imposed bail conditions.
According to the agency, their participation in the event amounted to a “blatant and wilful disregard” of the court’s order.
Bharadwaj was granted bail on technical grounds in 2021, while Rao was released on bail in 2022.
At the time of granting bail, the trial court had imposed several conditions on both accused, including restrictions on leaving Mumbai without permission, surrendering passports to the NIA, and refraining from speaking to the media about the case.
The Elgar Parishad case relates to alleged links between activists and banned Maoist organisations in connection with the 2018 violence near Bhima Koregaon in Maharashtra.
