Emergency tried to crush democracy, civil liberties: Himanta

Business To Business, Gorakhpur, 25th June, 2026:   Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday said the Emergency imposed in 1975 was an attempt to undermine India's democratic values and civil liberties, describing the period as one of the darkest chapters in the country's democratic history.
Marking the anniversary of the Emergency, Sarma paid tribute to those who resisted the restrictions imposed during the period and fought to safeguard democratic institutions and freedoms.
In a post on social media, the Assam chief minister said, "We remember that dark chapter in the history of Indian democracy, when in 1975 the Emergency was imposed in an attempt to crush the country's democratic values and civil liberties."
He also honoured the individuals he described as "brave warriors" who struggled to protect democracy and uphold constitutional principles during the Emergency, which lasted from June 25, 1975, to March 21, 1977.
The Emergency remains a significant and widely debated period in India's political history, marked by the suspension of civil liberties, curbs on press freedom and the detention of political opponents under the government led by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
