EX-PM Deve Gowda's long parliamentary inning coming to an end on June 25

Business To Business, Amaravati, 8th June, 2026:  The parliamentary journey of former Prime Minister H. D. Deve Gowda is set to conclude on June 25, as the veteran leader has not been renominated for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections by the National Democratic Alliance (NDA).
At 93, Deve Gowda is one of India's longest-serving political figures, with a parliamentary career spanning nearly five decades.
BJP Announces Karnataka Candidate
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has nominated M. Nagaraja for one of the four Rajya Sabha seats from Karnataka that are falling vacant.
Based on the current strength of parties in the Karnataka Assembly:

  • The BJP is expected to win one seat.
  • The Indian National Congress is poised to secure the remaining three seats.
End of a Remarkable Political Chapter
Deve Gowda's political career has included:
  • Service in the Karnataka Legislative Assembly.
  • Multiple terms in the Lok Sabha.
  • Membership in the Rajya Sabha.
  • Tenure as Chief Minister of Karnataka.
  • Service as India's Prime Minister from 1996 to 1997.
He remains the patriarch of the Janata Dal (Secular) (JD-S), which is currently an ally of the BJP-led NDA.
Deve Gowda's retirement from the Rajya Sabha marks the end of an era in Indian politics. Known for his roots in agrarian politics and coalition-era governance, he played a significant role in shaping regional and national political alliances over several decades.
While he may no longer be a member of Parliament after June 25, Deve Gowda is expected to continue serving as a guiding figure for the JD(S) and remain an influential voice in Karnataka politics.
