FIR against Mamata over 'provocative' remarks during Bengal poll campaign

Business To Business, Kolkata, 13th June, 2026:  An FIR has been registered against former West Bengal chief minister and Mamata Banerjee over remarks she allegedly made during the last Assembly election campaign, according to a senior police officer.
The complaint was filed by an individual at Netaji Nagar Police Station, alleging that comments made by Banerjee at a party programme held on March 9 at the Metro Channel area of Kolkata were capable of promoting enmity between different communities.
According to the complainant, the remarks violated provisions related to maintaining communal harmony and public order.
Police said the matter was first registered as a Zero FIR, a procedure that allows a complaint to be recorded at any police station irrespective of where the alleged offence took place.
Subsequently, the case was transferred to Hare Street Police Station, since the location where the remarks were allegedly made falls under its jurisdiction.
A Zero FIR enables police to:

  • Register a complaint immediately.
  • Avoid delays due to jurisdictional issues.
  • Transfer the case later to the appropriate police station for investigation.
The registration of the FIR comes amid an already charged political atmosphere in West Bengal, where tensions between the ruling establishment and opposition parties have intensified in recent months.
At this stage:
  • Registration of an FIR does not imply guilt.
  • The allegations will be examined during the investigation.
  • Any further legal action will depend on the evidence gathered by the police and subsequent judicial proceedings.
No detailed public response from Banerjee or the All India Trinamool Congress was immediately available regarding the FIR.
