First session of new Assam assembly from May 21

Business To Business, Guwahati, 13th May 2026: The first session of the 16th Assam Legislative Assembly will convene for four days beginning May 21, during which newly elected MLAs will take their oath, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Wednesday.
Addressing a press conference after chairing the first cabinet meeting of his second term in office, Sarma announced that senior-most BJP MLA and former minister Chandra Mohan Patowary would serve as the pro tem Speaker of the assembly.
The chief minister said Lakshman Prasad Acharya has been informed about the decision and that an official notification regarding the assembly session will be issued shortly.
The session will formally initiate proceedings of the newly constituted House following the recent Assam Assembly elections.
