Former Bengal minister Manas Bhunia quits TMC
Business To Business, Jaipur, 13th June, 2026: Former West Bengal minister Manas Bhunia on Saturday resigned from the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC), adding to the turmoil within the party following its recent electoral setback in the Assembly elections.
Speaking to the media, Bhunia said he had sent a letter to Mamata Banerjee, informing her of his decision to resign from:
- All organizational posts held by him in the party.
- Primary membership of the TMC.
The exact reasons behind his resignation were not immediately detailed.
Bhunia is a prominent political figure in West Bengal and has had a long legislative career.
Key highlights include:
- Seven-time MLA from Sabang.
- Won the constituency six times as a candidate of the Indian National Congress.
- Joined the TMC in 2016 after leaving the Congress.
- Served as a minister in the government headed by Mamata Banerjee.
Bhunia's departure comes at a time when the TMC is facing one of the most challenging periods in its history, marked by:
- Electoral defeat in the Assembly polls.
- Resignations of several MPs and senior leaders.
- Internal factional disputes.
- Public disagreements among party leaders.
- Efforts by dissident lawmakers to form a separate parliamentary faction.
As a senior leader with decades of political experience and a strong base in
Paschim Medinipur, Bhunia's resignation is likely to intensify concerns within the TMC about organizational stability and cadre morale.
Whether he joins another political party or adopts an independent political role remains unclear. His next move will be closely watched, particularly given the ongoing realignment of political forces in West Bengal following the change in government.
