From Left showground to saffron coronation: Brigade braces for new turn in Bengal’s political wheel

Business To Business, Kolkata, 8th May, 2026: Brigade Parade Ground has long served as the grand theatre of political mobilisation in West Bengal, decades before television debates and social media transformed political discourse into a constant public spectacle.
Since the 1950s, the vast ground in the heart of Kolkata has hosted massive political gatherings and witnessed the presence of international figures such as Nikita Khrushchev, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and Hugo Chavez.
On Friday, amid dark monsoon clouds, workers erected giant rainproof hangars while police personnel marked security grids across the Maidan — the sprawling open ground owned by the Indian Army that includes Brigade Parade Ground.
The historic venue, once used as a military parade ground during British rule, now appears set to witness another major ideological transition in Bengal’s turbulent political history as the state prepares for the swearing-in of its first BJP government.
