Business To Business, Kolkata, 01st July, 2026: West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Wednesday criticised the previous Trinamool Congress (TMC) government, alleging that it had left the state's public healthcare system in a "dilapidated" condition and that his administration was working to restore and strengthen it.
Adhikari made the remarks while addressing a programme in Salt Lake to mark National Doctors' Day, observed annually on July 1 in honour of noted physician and former West Bengal Chief Minister Bidhan Chandra Roy, whose birth and death anniversaries fall on the same day.
Recalling a statement by former Chief Minister Jyoti Basu, Adhikari said, "Today, I am reminded of something that former CM Jyoti Basu had said about Bidhan Chandra Roy. I remember it even more because I am facing the exact opposite situation. After taking over as chief minister, Jyoti Basu had said that wherever he went to start a new project, he found that Bidhan Chandra Roy had already initiated it."
Drawing a contrast with Basu's experience, Adhikari alleged that his government inherited a weakened public healthcare system and is now focused on reviving infrastructure and improving healthcare services across the state.
