Himanta, Gadkari review key infrastructure projects in Assam
Business To Business, Guwahati, 1st June, 2026: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma met with Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari in New Delhi on Monday to review and discuss the progress of key infrastructure projects in the state.
Focus of the meeting
The discussions centered on:
- Ongoing national highway projects in Assam.
- Road connectivity improvements.
- Infrastructure initiatives aimed at supporting economic growth and regional development.
- Resolving issues affecting project implementation and execution.
Sarma's remarks
Following the meeting, Sarma praised Gadkari's role in the state's infrastructure development, describing their interaction as a "learning experience." He said Assam has benefited substantially from the Union minister's support and noted that Gadkari has consistently helped address challenges related to infrastructure projects.
Importance for Assam
Improved transport infrastructure is a key component of Assam's development strategy. Better highways and connectivity can:
- Enhance trade and logistics.
- Improve access to remote regions.
- Boost tourism.
- Facilitate industrial investment.
- Strengthen links between the Northeast and the rest of India.
Broader context
Under Gadkari's tenure, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has undertaken major highway expansion projects across the Northeast, a region that has historically faced connectivity challenges due to its terrain and geographic location.
For Assam, which serves as the gateway to much of Northeast India, continued investment in roads, bridges, and transport corridors is seen as critical for economic integration and regional development. The meeting indicates ongoing coordination between the state government and the Centre to ensure that these projects progress smoothly and contribute to Assam's long-term growth objectives.
