Insurgency no longer major issue in Northeast, Shah urges CMs to push for development

Business To Business, New Delhi, 4th June, 2026:  Amit Shah on Thursday said that insurgency is no longer a major challenge in India's Northeast and called on state governments in the region to focus on development, citizen welfare, and emerging economic opportunities.
Speaking at the 73rd Plenary Session of the North Eastern Council, Shah said the Northeast has undergone a significant transformation over the past decade, with improved peace and stability creating conditions for growth and investment.
Key remarks
According to Shah:

  • Insurgency is no longer a dominant issue in the region.
  • State governments should move beyond a law-and-order-centric approach.
  • Greater emphasis should be placed on protecting citizens' rights.
  • Development benefits should reach every household.
In a post on social media, he said:
"Insurgency is no longer a major issue in the Northeast. The focus of state governments should now shift from maintaining law and order to safeguarding the rights of citizens and ensuring that the benefits of development reach every household."
Focus on economic growth
The Home Minister also encouraged northeastern states to capitalize on:
  • Emerging technologies
  • Innovation-driven industries
  • New economic sectors
  • Investment opportunities created by improved security conditions
Broader context
The Northeast has seen a decline in insurgency-related incidents in recent years, aided by peace agreements, security measures, and development initiatives. The central government has repeatedly highlighted improvements in connectivity, infrastructure, tourism, and investment across the region.
Shah's remarks reflect the government's view that the Northeast is entering a new phase in which economic development, employment generation, and social welfare should become the primary priorities, building on the gains made in security and stability.
The NEC meeting brought together leaders and officials from the northeastern states to review development initiatives and discuss strategies for accelerating growth in the region.
