Kolkata Municipal Corporation elections to be held in December: CM Suvendu Adhikari
Business To Business, Kolkata, 15th June, 2026: Suvendu Adhikari on Monday announced that elections to the Kolkata Municipal Corporation will be held by December 2026, indicating the state government's intention to restore an elected civic administration soon after the dissolution of the previous board.
The announcement comes only days after the BJP-led state government dissolved the TMC-controlled KMC board following the resignation of former Mayor Firhad Hakim.
Adhikari said the government favours conducting the civic polls after carrying out a delimitation of municipal wards.
Delimitation involves:
- Redrawing ward boundaries.
- Adjusting representation based on population changes.
- Rationalising the distribution of voters across wards.
- Updating the electoral map before elections.
According to the Chief Minister, the process would help ensure fair representation before residents elect a new civic body.
The
Kolkata Municipal Corporation is one of the country's largest urban local bodies and governs
Kolkata, the state's capital and largest city.
The upcoming election will be politically significant because:
- It will be the first KMC election since the change of government in West Bengal.
- The civic body has historically been an important political battleground.
- The outcome will be viewed as a test of political strength in the state after the 2026 Assembly elections.
Before the election schedule is announced, the government is expected to:
- Complete the ward delimitation exercise.
- Publish revised ward boundaries.
- Finalize electoral rolls.
- Coordinate with the State Election Commission for the conduct of polls.
If the timeline outlined by the Chief Minister is maintained, Kolkata residents could elect a new municipal board by the end of this year.
