Mamata pitches Bengal polls as battle of identity, says Delhi next

Business To Business, Kolkata, 31 March 2026: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday raised issues of Bengali identity, the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, and her party’s national ambitions during a poll campaign, declaring that after securing victory next month, the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) would work towards “capturing Delhi.”
Addressing a rally in Debra, located in Paschim Medinipur—a politically significant region where the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) made notable gains in 2021 before the TMC regained ground in the Lok Sabha polls—Banerjee framed the election as more than a contest for state power.
She described it as a fight against what she alleged to be the BJP’s attempts to exert political, cultural, and electoral control over the state.
“After winning in West Bengal, we will unite everyone across the country to capture Delhi,” Banerjee said, underscoring her effort to position herself as a key national opposition voice while contesting a high-stakes electoral battle at home.
