Business To Business, Kolkata, 22nd July, 2026: Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday appealed to the Congress and the CPI(M) to set aside their differences and unite against the BJP in West Bengal under the INDIA bloc, even as divisions within her own party were on display through rival Martyrs' Day rallies.
The annual observance commemorates the killing of 13 Youth Congress workers in police firing during a rally led by Banerjee on July 21, 1993, under the then Left Front government. This year marked the first time since the TMC came to power that the event was held in a divided manner.
Three separate Martyrs' Day programmes took place in Kolkata within a radius of less than three kilometres — the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC rally near the Birla Planetarium, a parallel rally organised by the Ritabrata Banerjee-led rebel faction at Mayo Road, and a Congress programme at Shahid Minar.
