Mamata’s sister-in-law, rebel MP Mala Roy among TMC leaders present at Suvendu's first KMC visit

Business To Business, Kolkata, 15th June, 2026:   In a politically significant development, Kajari Banerjee, the sister-in-law of former West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee, attended a programme at the Kolkata Municipal Corporation on Monday during the first official visit of Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari to the civic body after taking office.
The event took place amid a deepening crisis within the All India Trinamool Congress, following the party's defeat in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections and the subsequent rebellion by a large section of its MPs.
Notable attendees
Among those present at the KMC programme were:

  • Kajari Banerjee
  • Mala Roy
  • Firhad Hakim
Mala Roy is among the MPs who have aligned themselves with the Nationalist Citizens Party of India-backed bloc that has announced support for the BJP-led NDA at the Centre.
Firhad Hakim, whose resignation led to the dissolution of the previous TMC-led KMC board, was also present at the programme.
The visit comes at a time when the TMC is facing one of the biggest internal rebellions in its history. Around 20 MPs have reportedly broken away from the party, merged with the NCPI, and extended support to the National Democratic Alliance.
Adhikari's first official visit to the KMC is being closely watched because the civic body has long been considered a stronghold of the TMC. The presence of former TMC leaders, rebel MPs, and members associated with Mamata Banerjee's extended family has added to speculation about shifting political alignments in West Bengal following the change in government.
While no political announcements were made at the event, the gathering underscored the rapidly evolving political landscape in the state and the challenges facing the TMC as it confronts internal divisions and defections.
