Business To Business, Imphal, 14th June, 2026: Y. Khemchand Singh on Sunday said that a National Sports University is being established in Imphal West district in recognition of the state's outstanding contribution to Indian sports and the achievements of its athletes.
Speaking to reporters during a programme marking 12 years of the government led by Narendra Modi, Singh said the university reflects the Centre's acknowledgement of the "exceptional sporting talent and spirit" of people from Manipur.
The university is being developed at Koutruk, and the chief minister indicated that it is likely to be inaugurated later this year.
The National Sports University is envisioned as a premier institution for sports education, coaching, sports sciences, and athlete development. It is expected to provide specialized training and academic programmes aimed at strengthening India's sporting ecosystem.
Manipur has long been regarded as one of India's leading sporting states, producing numerous national and international athletes across disciplines such as boxing, weightlifting, football, hockey, and archery. The establishment of the university is expected to further enhance sports infrastructure and training opportunities in the region.
