Modi govt not paying over Rs 14 cr dues to states towards MGNREGA wages, alleges Kharge

Business To Business, New Delhi, 30th June, 2026:  Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Tuesday alleged that the Narendra Modi government has not released pending dues amounting to Rs 17,144.13 crore to states and Union Territories towards wages under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA).
Citing a reply presented in the Lok Sabha, Kharge claimed that dues of Rs 17,144.13 crore were outstanding to 34 states and Union Territories as of March 2026.
He also alleged that the Centre has effectively ended MGNREGA and replaced it with the Viksit Bharat – Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin) (VB-G RAM G), which, according to him, increases the financial burden on states by 40 per cent.
In a post on X, Kharge said, "Narendra Modi ji, you've ended MGNREGA, stripping rural India of the 'right to work'. Isn't it true that you haven't paid the states their MGNREGA dues? According to the response presented in the Lok Sabha, Rs 17,144.13 crore was outstanding to 34 states and UTs as of March 2026."
The Centre had not immediately responded to the allegations.
