Never expected to be minister: RG Kar victim's mother after Bengal cabinet expansion

Business To Business, Kolkata, 1st June, 2026:   Ratna Debnath said on Monday that she was unconcerned about not being included in the state cabinet and remained focused on seeking justice for her daughter and serving the public as an elected representative.
Her remarks
Debnath, whose daughter was raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in August 2024, said her entry into politics was never motivated by a desire for power or a ministerial position.
Speaking to the press, she stated that:

  • She never expected to become a minister.
  • Politics was not originally part of her plans.
  • Her primary goal has always been securing justice for her daughter.
  • Public service remains her main priority as an MLA.
She emphasized that even if she had not entered electoral politics, she would have continued pursuing justice in the case.
Background
The RG Kar case triggered widespread protests across West Bengal and drew national attention, with citizens, medical professionals, and civil society groups demanding accountability and stronger safety measures.
Debnath's public role grew out of her campaign for justice following the crime, and she subsequently entered active politics, eventually becoming a legislator.
Position on cabinet exclusion
Addressing speculation about her absence from the council of ministers, Debnath indicated that she had neither sought nor expected a ministerial berth. She said that neither political office nor executive power had been her objective and that she remained committed to working for the welfare of the people who elected her.
Her comments suggest an effort to frame her political career as an extension of her public advocacy and social commitment rather than a pursuit of governmental office.
