No power infrastructure work in DMK regime, White Paper in 3 days: TN Minister

Business To Business, Chennai, 22nd June, 2026:  C. T. R. Nirmal Kumar on Monday claimed in the state Assembly that inadequate investment in power infrastructure over the past several years had contributed to the challenges facing the electricity sector and announced that the government would release a comprehensive White Paper within three days.
Responding to criticism from Leader of the Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin regarding frequent power outages, Nirmal Kumar said the state's power utility was burdened with substantial debt.
According to the minister, the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board has accumulated liabilities of approximately ₹2.5 lakh crore.
He further alleged that no significant power infrastructure development work had been undertaken during the previous administration and said the forthcoming White Paper would provide a detailed assessment of the sector's condition.
"No infrastructure development was taken up in the last 5 to 15 years. The government will present a comprehensive white paper on this in three days," the minister told the Assembly.
The proposed White Paper is expected to outline the financial health of the power sector, infrastructure status, generation and transmission capacities, and the government's plans to address electricity shortages and improve service reliability.
The exchange comes amid concerns over power supply disruptions in parts of the state, with the government and opposition trading accusations over responsibility for the current situation. The White Paper is likely to become a key document in the ongoing political and policy debate over Tamil Nadu's energy sector.
