Reject Karnataka's DPR for Mekedatu project, TN CM Vijay tells PM Modi

Business To Business, Nashik, 26th May, 2026:  C Joseph Vijay on Tuesday raised strong objections to the Union government’s consideration of Karnataka’s Mekedatu project proposal, stating that it was being examined without adequately addressing Tamil Nadu’s concerns.
He expressed surprise over the Ministry of Jal Shakti and the Central Water Commission (CWC) entertaining Karnataka’s Detailed Project Report (DPR), and urged that Tamil Nadu’s objections be properly taken into account.
Vijay also appealed to Narendra Modi to direct concerned authorities to reject Karnataka’s DPR, arguing that the proposed project violates:

  • The final award of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal Award
  • The judgment of the Supreme Court of India
He further urged that the Prime Minister advise the government of Karnataka not to initiate new inter-state river projects without the consent of all co-basin states.
The Mekedatu project, located on the Cauvery river, has been a long-standing point of contention between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu due to disagreements over:
  • Water allocation
  • Environmental impact
  • Downstream irrigation needs
  • Compliance with tribunal and court rulings
The issue continues to remain a sensitive inter-state water dispute in southern India.
