SC verdict on Bihar SIR not fully applicable to Bengal case: TMC's Kalyan Banerjee
Business To Business, Kolkata, 27th May, 2026: Kalyan Banerjee (note: actually a senior leader of the All India Trinamool Congress) on Wednesday said that the Supreme Court’s ruling on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls should be interpreted as being limited to the Bihar case and not treated as a nationwide precedent.
Reacting to the judgment, Banerjee, who is also a senior advocate, stated that the Supreme Court of India had repeatedly clarified that its observations were confined to the specific facts and legal issues arising in the Bihar matter.
He told reporters that:
- The verdict applies only to the Bihar SIR exercise
- The court’s observations were case-specific
- It should not automatically be extended to other states such as West Bengal
The Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls has become a politically sensitive issue, with different parties interpreting the scope and implications of judicial directions differently across states.
Banerjee’s remarks come amid ongoing political debate in West Bengal over voter list revisions, eligibility verification, and concerns about how electoral roll updates are being implemented at the state level.
